How many times will you park at Town Square between now and the first Saturday in December? If you follow the city's event calendar, you'll probably park there at least four times. The Town Square campus is more than a park. The City of Murrieta lists City Hall at 1 Town Square, the Murrieta Public Library at 8 Town Square and Town Square Park & Amphitheater at 11 Town Square. Almost every large public date on Murrieta's fall calendar points to that one cluster of addresses.
There's also a construction project on the campus that has been running since last September. The library's Children's Library Expansion has a planned opening of December 2026, according to the city's own year-end accomplishments report. If that plan holds, the fall event season and the build end in the same month. Town Square would then have a large new space built for ordinary weekday use.
The city has these dates on the calendar for Town Square from late October through early December:
The Field of Honor and the parade overlap on Nov. 11, and Dec. 5 has two separate events on the same lawn eight hours apart. Those two stretches are when Town Square will be at its busiest. Each of these events has a start date and an end date. People come for the event, the event ends, and the lawn goes quiet until the next one.
The library expansion is designed for the hours between those events. Patch's May report on the project listed what the build includes:
Size is the biggest change. Patch reported in July that the expansion adds 4,500 square feet and brings the children's area to over 7,200 square feet. Adding 4,500 square feet to the current 2,700-square-foot children's area lands right around that mark, roughly 2.7 times the space kids have now, and the current room isn't going away. It becomes the tween zone, so kids who have outgrown picture books get a room of their own and no longer share one floor with toddlers.
The garden is the piece that ties the library most directly to the rest of the campus. Plans call for the Carol Carson Garden of Verses to support year-round programming. That puts outdoor library programming space at 8 Town Square, on the same campus as the amphitheater lawn at 11 Town Square.
The Children's Library Expansion is an $8 million project. The money comes from three directions. The state contributed through the California State Library's Building Forward Grant. The city contributed Library Development Impact Fees and Measure T funds. Community donors include the Murrieta Public Library Foundation, the Friends of the Murrieta Library and local partners.
The local share has a clear breakdown. As of September 2025, the city counted more than $388,000 in community commitments. The Foundation pledged $135,000, the Friends of the Murrieta Library $103,400, and a water district $110,000 in support that included in-kind contributions and rebates. Another $40,000 came from pending private-sector commitments. A GoFundMe for the space had raised over $8,250 by the time of Patch's May report. Fundraising will continue throughout construction. The Foundation's and Friends' pledges alone add up to more than $238,000 from two volunteer-driven library groups.
The city has also been raising money at its own events. Its accomplishments report lists library expansion outreach and fundraising at the Fireman's BBQ, the Father's Day Car Show and the Birthday Bash. So the event calendar has been helping pay for the building that's going up next to it.
Here are the dates as of mid-October.
Construction began in September 2025. In the city's FY 2025/26 accomplishments report, the Children's Area Expansion and Storytime Room was described as roughly 50% complete, with a planned opening of December 2026. Patch's July 29 report said completion was expected in fall 2026.
On June 16, 2026, the City Council amended the contract with R.C. Construction Services. The new contract amount is $5,998,606.34 plus a 15% contingency, and the attached scope estimates a 14-day schedule impact. The agreement's current termination date is Dec. 31, 2026.
The city hasn't announced a ribbon-cutting or grand-opening date. In May, library staff were careful about timing. Speaking to Patch, a library spokesperson praised the work "John and his team at RC Construction" were doing and added:
"While the staff may not have an opening timeline for the expansion just yet, we know your patience and support will be worth the wait."
December is the city's planned month, and the opening isn't confirmed. A 14-day schedule adjustment on a contract that ends Dec. 31 leaves little room for slippage. If the date moves, the most likely result is that the expansion opens right after the holiday events instead of during them.
The library is open during construction. The building closed from July 20 to Aug. 1 for work that was part of the same project. That work included new carpeting and flooring, plus concrete repairs at the public entrances and the parking lot, and the library reopened Aug. 3.
So the entrances and parking lot have already been redone, and they'll serve the expanded building too. That work also comes before the heaviest parking stretch of the year on the campus. The library's digital collection, which includes eBooks, eAudiobooks and online databases, is available around the clock through the library's page on the city website.
Saturday, Dec. 5 is the last big date on the fall calendar, and it's in the month the library expansion is planned to open. Donuts with Santa runs in the morning, and the tree lighting takes place at 6 p.m. If the expansion opens on schedule, it will be the first permanent addition to the campus since this year's event season began.
If you want to take part before then, the city is taking sign-ups to decorate a wreath for the Festival of Wreaths or to be a vendor. Details are on the Tree Lighting & Festival of Wreaths event page. Dark in the Park on Oct. 23 is the next free evening on the lawn.
